Pittsburgh – Yankees first-team captain Anthony Rizzo missed the two games against the Buccaneers this week with lower back pain and will not be ready Thursday night for the opening game of a four-game series at Fenway against the Red Sox.
Maybe Friday or Saturday.

“Around the time of the game (Wednesday) after he went through some (rehabilitation), I spoke to (Rizzo) a little bit and he definitely felt better,” Yankees coach Aaron Boone said before his club hit the Buccaneers, 16. 0. “We’ll see how it is (Thursday). I wasn’t expecting him there, but I definitely feel like he moved the needle.”
Rizzo has a history of his back stiffening now and then and has flared up again in the past week or so. He was able to shake it off last weekend in Cleveland when he played the second game of a separate double-header on Saturday and Sunday’s series finale against the Guardians.

“That’s kind of the thing he talked about that used to sound like once a year,” Boone said. “It is a day-to-day thing. I hope he continues to improve with rehabilitation and we will see where we are (Thursday) and at the weekend.”
Rizzo hit .223 with 22 homers, 52 RBI and .844 OPS in 77 games. He’s been struggling the past two weeks, averaging .118 (4 vs. 34) and three guards in the last 11 games.
