Mark Appel is proof that even for a #1 draft pick, the road to the major tournaments is sometimes bumpy.

Abel was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, nine years after he was first recruited publicly by Houston. In between, he bounced around minors, traded in a 2015 deal that sent Ken Giles to the Astros — and even quit baseball for a bit.

He made a comeback last year and finally joined the Phillies this weekend, although he hasn’t played. If the 30-year-old Abel appears in a game for Philadelphia, he will be the fourth overall pick to make his league debut this year, joining Royce Lewis (twins) in 2017, and Adley 2019. Rochman (Orioles) and Spencer Turkelson (Tigers) for 2020 .

Only once, four of the top picks made their debut in a single year. That was in 1989, when Andy Benes and Ken Griffey Jr. And Jeff King – the number one pick in each of the past three years – all have their big league careers. Another top pick that debuted in 1989 was Ben MacDonald, who was actually drafted that same year by Baltimore.

As the draft rolls out next month, here are a few more notes on the history of the first public picks, with some help from Baseball-Reference.com:

Although 1989 is the only year the top four players have made their league debuts so far, there have been other seasons in which the top spot has done so. These were 2007 (Luke Hochevar, Justin Upton, Josh Hamilton) and 1987 (PJ Surhoff, Sean Abner, Tim Belcher).

– Although more common in the early days of the draft, MacDonald is the last player to debut in the same year that he was first drafted overall. The longest wait goes back to Matt Bush, who was kidnapped by San Diego in 2004 and finally shown in majors in 2016 for Texas. Still with the Rangers.

– Abel is one of a handful of the No. 1 picks who hasn’t played in a major. Steve Chilcot, who was picked up by the New York Mets in 1966, and Brian Taylor, who was captured by the New York Yankees in 1991, both had injury problems. Brady Aiken, chosen by Houston in 2014, is a more recent example. Last year’s top pick Henry Davis reached the Double-A in the Pittsburgh Pirates system.

Trivia Time

Appel was drafted by two other teams (and they weren’t signed) before the Astros first picked him overall. Who are these franchisees?

line of the week

Austin Hayes had to beat the weather to get to the course. On Wednesday night, Hayes and the Orioles defeated Washington 7-0 in a match shorter than six innings. That was enough time – he hit a hit on the first, a homer on the third, a triple on the fourth, and a double on the sixth.

Return of the week

According to the Baseball Savant, the Los Angeles Dodgers had a 1.1% chance of beating Atlanta on Sunday night, having lost 2-0 with two ninth-place wins and no one left. Former Dodger Kenley Jansen then allowed a pair of singles, putting the men first and third. After Chris Taylor took second, Trayce Thompson scored both runners to force additional rounds.

Each team scored once for 10th before the Dodgers finally won 5-3 at 11. Los Angeles won two of three at Freddie Freeman’s return to Atlanta.

tria’s answer

The Detroit Tigers drafted Abel out of high school in 2009 in the 15th round. He was picked eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012 before returning to Stanford in his first season and moving up to number one.
