Watch N.J. cops race to rescue driver from burning car

Three Ridgefield Park Police officers rescued a driver after the man’s car had an electrical problem and caught fire early Saturday morning, officials said.

Body camera footage from an officer released by Ridgefield Park Police shows officers pulling the 55-year-old Fort Lee man out of the passenger side front window of the burning vehicle on Winant Street.

“Facing the intense heat, broken glass and a host of physical barriers, the three officers were able to physically remove (the driver) as flames began to take over the vehicle’s cabin,” police said in a statement.

The dramatic rescue began to unfold around 2 a.m. when the first officer – Sgt. Ridgefield Park Police said Nicholas Triano attempted to use a Halligan rod, a tool used by first responders, to make his way into the vehicle.

Moments later, officers Anthony D’Elia and Nicholas Dalto appeared and began to pull the driver out the window as the fire spread rapidly.

Firefighters arrived in Ridgefield Park to put out the fire. The driver was treated at the scene and released to a family member. Officials said a passing motorist also stopped to assist the police.
