Sony is working on its first 100MP camera sensor. According to a well-known Chinese digital chat station, the sensor will target middleware mobile phones. It is worth noting that Sony also manufactures camera sensors for smartphones from Apple and Google.
Digital Chat Station claims that the 100MP sensor will be part of Sony’s IMX8 series, which debuted with the 54MP 1/1.49 IMX800 sensor used on the Honor 70 series. The company is also reported to be working on the IMX9 series of sensors.
Previous information indicates that the Sony IMX9 series camera, which is equipped with a sensor called IMX989 50 megapixel 1-inch, is expected to make its debut in the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra.
With a 100-megapixel sensor, Sony will compete more directly with Samsung, which is already working on a 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP3 sensor. Motorola is also expected to release a smartphone with a 200MP ISOCELL HP1 sensor next month.
The CEO of Sony recently stated that smartphone cameras could outperform DSLRs in image quality in the next few years.
