Rachel Zegler Cast in Hunger Games Prequel Movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

West Side Story star Rachel Ziegler is set to star in The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Ziegler initially sparked speculation about her choice by tweeting on Monday night, “Listen…..can you grow in peace? Become a decisively rested individual?”. Fans were quick to point out that the first letter of each word in her tweet spelled out the main character’s name, Lucy Gray Bird.

The Hunger Games prequel is adapted from Suzanne Collins’ 2020 book of the same name, set decades before Katniss Everdeen’s adventures in The Hunger Games.

Jennifer Lawrence originally played Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games series, but she is unlikely to appear under the story mode.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is about Coriolanus Snow, an ambitious boy who eventually becomes the tyrannical leader of the miserable country of Panem. Tom Blythe will play Young Snow.

In the film, Snow will be chosen to direct Lucy Gray, the homage to the female poor from District 12, during the tenth edition of The Hunger Games.

As shown in the original film series, the games – a televised event – randomly choose teens from each region to fight to the death.

Hunger Games veteran Francis Lawrence will direct the upcoming movie, which begins production later this year.

“Like everyone else, I first saw Rachel Ziegler on West Side Story, and like everyone else, I knew I was watching a star who would run the screen for a generation,” Lawrence said in a prepared statement. “Lucy Gray is a perfect match for her as an actress: the character is bold, independent and defiant, but also vulnerable, emotional and loving. Rachel will make this character unforgettable.”

“When you read Susan’s book, Lucy Gray’s emotional intelligence, physical agility, and strong, determined singing voice shine through. Rachel embodies all of these skills — she is the perfect choice for Lucy Gray,” said Nathan Kahana, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Franchise producer Nina Jacobson and co-producer Brad Simpson will oversee the latest installment of The Hunger Games, along with Lawrence.
