Pirates admit they missed the boat on Yankees’ Clay Holmes

The Pittsburgh Pirates managed to avoid Clay Holmes in their Tuesday night win over the New York Yankees.

This was good for pirates, who didn’t have to see firsthand what it could be for them. Holmes played four seasons with the Pirates before being traded to the Yankees in 2021. However, with the Pirates, Holmes scored a 5-7 and 5.57 ERA. In New York, he’s 4-0 with 0.49 ERA and 15 saves.

Triblive.com reports that some pirate shooters are speculating about what they missed out on with Holmes.

jar Mitch Keeler: “Everyone knew it was there, so there wasn’t much to talk about. We knew it was going to happen.”

jar Chris Stratton: “I don’t think anyone here is surprised by the results he’s getting because his stuff was electric. There’s no secret to what he’s doing either. He’s simple to handle. His stuff is just fine.”

Director Derek Shelton also looked back at his time with Holmes.

“Usage and what they do, and that’s where the self-reflection comes in that we may not have used his weapons the way we should,” Shelton said on Tuesday 93.7 on Tuesday afternoon. “We have to make sure that we go back and look when guys go to other places and people make adjustments to what those adjustments are, why they’ve made those adjustments and then think about what our process is in terms of conversations about adjustment or adjustments that we haven’t had.”

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is no stranger to stealing talent from Pittsburgh. He acquired right-hand Jameson Tylon from the Pirates ahead of the 2021 season and closed a deal with the Pirates on Sunday, when he replaced left-hand manny Bañuelos to Pittsburgh in exchange for cash considerations.
