In a unanimous decision stemming from a political dispute between incumbent Senate President Nicholas Scutari, the state Supreme Court on Wednesday clarified what should happen when city council seats held by political party candidates are suddenly vacated in New Jersey.

The state’s highest court has ruled that when there is a vacancy in a local council, the municipal government must choose from among three candidates recommended by a political party if the seat has been filled by a candidate from that party and the position cannot be left vacant.
