Man arrested after stealing police car on July 4, crashing it twice, authorities say

A 28-year-old man stole a South Amboy police car on Monday before being involved in two separate accidents in Woodbridge and then attempted to hijack other cars before being arrested, authorities said.

Woodbridge Police said they learned of the theft of the police car at 1:05 p.m., minutes before Jamil T. Robinson crashed on Route 35 near South Park Drive.

Woodbridge Police said Robinson continued driving north and quickly crashed a second time, disabling the vehicle on Route 1 North near Avenell Street.

Police said Robinson then began running north in the southern lanes of Route 1 where he unsuccessfully attempted to steal several more cars. Soon he was arrested.

Robinson, of Paterson, was charged with three counts of motor vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, motor vehicle assault, resisting arrest, endangering an injured victim, and obstruction.

South Amboy Police could not be reached immediately for additional information.
