Maharashtra Government to Launch First Electric Bus Shivaee on June 1 for Pune-Ahmednagar Route, to Operate Six Daily Service


Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on Monday said it will launch its first-ever electric bus on June 1 on the Pune-Ahmadnagar road on the day the state-run transport authority will enter its 75th year of operations.

In a statement issued here, MSRTC said the new e-bus, dubbed ‘Shivaee’, will be launched in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other dignitaries at the company’s regional office headquarters in Pune.

On June 1, 1948, the first MSRTC bus service was launched on Pune-Ahmednagar Road. Accordingly, the state-owned Transport Authority will celebrate its 74th anniversary on Wednesday and enter the Diamond Jubilee Year.

MSRTC is one of the largest state-owned public transportation companies in the country with a fleet of more than 16,000 buses. The losing company was carrying more than 65 passengers per day before the pandemic broke out in March 2020.

According to the statement, Laxman Kevate, commander of the first bus operating on the Pune-Ahmednagar Road on June 1, 1948, will launch the first electronic bus from MSRTC “Shivaee”. Besides, Ajit Pawar will open a charging station at the headquarters of the company’s regional office.

The transport authority will operate six daily services with a 12-meter e-bus with a capacity of 43 seats, according to the statement.

The company said the electronic bus, which is free of noise and air pollution, has a capacity of 322 kilovolts and will operate at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
