The move was expected as the 29-year-old is recovering from right shoulder impingement syndrome, which put him on the 60-day hit list in March. When the German completes his rehab, the Yankees will have to bring him back from IL and put him back on the 40-man list.
The Yankees are expected to build German as a starting leader. He played 22 games last season, 18 starts, and went 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA. But the Germans suffered some shoulder discomfort late last season, then more in January when he was tossed during the MLB shutdown.
The German won the 18 best matches of his career in 2019 before leaving the team in September due to a domestic violence incident, which put the 2020 season on hold for the COVID-shortified COVID campaign.
