Gran Turismo Movie / TV Series in the Works at Sony, Neill Blomkamp in Talks to Direct: Report

Gran Turismo is said to be being adapted into a movie or television series by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. This project is said to be in a very early stage of development at the moment, and the adaptation plot is currently under wraps. The studios are hoping to lock down director Neil Blomkamp to head the project. Blomkamp broke onto the scene with the 2009 sci-fi film District 9, before moving on to Matt Damon-led sci-fi thriller 2013 Elysium, and 2015 sci-fi thriller Chappie.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions recently collaborated on Uncharted which grossed over $400 million (about Rs 3,106 crore). Now, Deadline is reporting that studios are hoping to replicate this financial success with a feature film based on the Gran Turismo games. However, there have been conflicting reports about the nature of this adaptation. A report by IGN claims that Sony is developing a Gran Turismo TV series instead of a movie. Could it be both?

Whatever the case may be, this franchise seems like an unlikely option because the Gran Turismo games don’t have any plot in it. These games are revered for their highly detailed graphics and accurate driving physics. Created by Polyphony and Kazunori Yamauchi in 1997, the Gran Turismo series is said to have sold over 85 million copies in total. The latest addition to the series, Gran Turismo 7, was released in March for PS4 and PS5.

Sony seems to be working very hard on video game mods. According to a report by Variety, the Horizon Zero Dawn series is heading to Netflix. It also mentions that Amazon Prime Video has landed in the God of War series, which has been reported in the past.

There’s also the much-anticipated series The Last of Us coming to HBO, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay as Joel and Ellie, respectively. The Twisted Metal series from Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatrice will soon appear on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service in the US. Furthermore, there is a movie based on Ghost of Tsushima directed by Chad Stahelsky, who is famous for John Wick Franchise business.
