A small group of teens caused a panic at the Newport Center shopping mall in Jersey City Thursday night when they set off fireworks inside the mall, authorities said on a police radio broadcast.
The accident occurred at 6:56 p.m. on the east side of the Downtown Mall, which is closest to the Drive East Mall. Police said in a radio broadcast that an initial investigation had concluded that fireworks had been thrown into a rubbish bin and the teenagers had escaped.
The initial caller reported the incident to Jersey City Police during the shooting inside the mall. Police who spoke with mall security quickly concluded that no shootings had been made, according to the radio transmission.
