Authorities said Friday that a couple found dead in a house fire had been killed in an apparent homicide and suicide.
Catherine Cern, 70, and her husband, Charles Cern, 71, died of gunshot wounds, according to the Hunterdon County District Attorney’s Office, which has released few other details about the investigation.
In a statement, Attorney General Renee Robson described the deaths as “murder and apparently suicide,” but did not mention anyone who had committed suicide or been murdered. A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office did not immediately respond to a letter requesting more information.
“The investigation is active and no further information will be released at this time,” Robson’s statement said.
Emergency crews discovered the couple died inside a burning home at about 6 a.m. Sunday on Flemington-Whitehouse Road in the Whitehouse Station section of Readington, according to authorities. The obituary identified Catherine and Charles CERN as married.
Anyone with information can contact Attorney General’s Office investigators at 908-788-1129 or township police at 908-534-4031.
