After crime escalated, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka fired the city’s director of public safety, putting him in the newly created position of deputy mayor while the city searches for a new head of the Department of Public Safety.

The mayor announced Thursday that Brian O’Hara, whom Baraka named acting director of public safety early last year, will now serve as “Vice Mayor for Police Services/Public Safety Strategic Initiatives.”
