Top Gun: Maverick Collects Nearly $250 Million at Global Box Office in Three Days

Top Gun: Maverick has racked up a staggering $248 million (Rs 1,922 crore) at the global box office in three days since it debuted on May 27 to emerge as the landmark release of leading man Tom Cruise. Half of that, which translates to $124 million, comes from the US and Canadian markets where it topped the 2005 release of War of the Worlds ($64 million) and the action-packed spy thriller: Mission Impossible – Fallout ($61 million) to become the best opening act of its career. This number, of course, includes paid previews. The rest of the group, on the other hand, comes from 62 locations outside the United States and Canada.

Distributed by Paramount Pictures, Top Gun: Maverick proved to be the top choice for UK movie-goers, bringing in $19.4 million from 735 locations. The action movie has set records for a cruise movie in markets such as France ($11.7 million), Australia ($10.7 million), Brazil ($5.3 million), the Netherlands ($2.4 million), Sweden ($2.2 million), the Middle East ($6.3 million), and Belgium ($1.7 million), New Zealand ($1.4 million), Poland ($1.2 million), Argentina ($1.2 million), Finland ($1.1 million) and Portugal ($770,000).

“I’m happy for everyone (associated with Top Gun: Maverick). I’m happy for the company, for Tom, for the filmmakers,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s head of local distribution, in a prepared statement.

However, Top Gun: Maverick did not perform as well as expected in India earning nearly Rs. 15 crores for the first three days. Trade analysts feel her performance may have been influenced by the crushing reaction to the horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is still going strong in its second week.

Top Gun: Maverick will likely put up great numbers on weekdays given the brand’s popularity. However, it may slow once the sci-fi adventure movie Jurassic World Dominion releases on June 10 in theaters.

The Top Gun sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed films such as the sci-fi influencer Tron: Legacy and the Action-Adventure Oblivion, from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Next to Cruz, Top Gun: Maverick’s cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glenn Powell and Lewis Pullman. The film is shown in theaters around the world.
